The Challenge
How can we cast a new light into a city model while elevating the information it conveys?
On the occasion of the relocation of the Cologne City Museum to the former Franz Sauer fashion house, the permanent exhibition was redesigned. As part of this initiative, the museum sought the development of an augmented reality application connected to the central exhibit of their exhibition: a magnificent 100-year-old physical city model located in the first room of the permanent exhibition.
How can we cast a new light into a city model while elevating the information it conveys?
Augmented Reality transforms how visitors access information, offering an engaging alternative to long written texts and map indexes. Using AR overlays we could present facets of the topic in ways that traditional curation methods never could, hence giving new value to the city model, making it the hero attraction of the revised exhibition.
The AR application guides visitors through the various stages of growth and transformation of the area at the physical city model – from the first settlements to the city's present expansion. On additional levels, the AR technology presents infrastructures and networks that shape the daily lives of residents, highlighting what makes life safe, mobile, and enjoyable, as well as aspects that sometimes strain communal living.
Through captivating "wow" moments in the experience, visitors are inspired to delve deeper into information that is often overlooked in traditional presentations. Artistic interpretations of architectural elements of security throughout time, piles of garbage falling onto the model or a visual representation of famous ceremonies keep younger audience engaged.
The project offers visitors an immersive exploration of Cologne's urban development, with thematic bubbles such as Metabolism, Growth, Care, and Resonances guiding their journey. Without feeling overwhelmed by abstract data, visitors can seamlessly navigate the AR experience through the city's historical development, from Roman times to the present. With an ambient style for the media content, the focus is directed towards the model, avoiding overcrowding the exhibition space.
Using loaned devices available at the museum entrance, visitors of all age can enjoy this inclusive experience.
