The Challenge
How can we make more attractive for young audiences the least visited collection in the museum: "archaeology of mining"?
farb.cORE is is a story-driven augmented reality (AR) game designed for the mining archaeology area of the Deutsches Bergbau Museum in Bochum. Through a sci-fi visual story, puzzle mechanisms and interactive AR scenes overlayed on the physical mine models of the museum, visitors discover methods and theories of experimental archaeology while help Jo to their time!
How can we make more attractive for young audiences the least visited collection in the museum: "archaeology of mining"?
Younger generations are increasingly drawn to interactive and digital experiences. We built a thrilling sci-fi game that enables young visitors to explore the collection on their own, and unearth the secrets of archaeology through practical recreations in AR. It transfromed the exhibition into a vibrant, interactive adventure.
farb.Core is a serious educational tool disguised as entertainment. By combining futuristic aesthetics with competence-oriented cultural education, we strike a chord with the times. The development of this game was a co-creative process, involving input from three different museums, NEEEU, and the target audience itself, ensuring that the final product is both educational and engaging.
The experience immerses visitors in a dystopian futururistic Bochum, where an artificial intelligence has drained the city, and world of its colors. Visitors, equipped with tablets, explore various sections of the museum, helping Jo—our main character—collect pigments from different eras and places, ultimately restoring color to their world.
Mining was one of prehistoric humanity’s first and most crucial technological advances. In this game, players collect tools, methods, and locations from both game and exhibition insights to later engage with the museum’s life-size mine models and practice techniques in an AR-powered version of the mine.
